Growing up this was one of my favorite songs. As I was driving home, it played on the radio. I couldn’t help but think about my old house, my old neighborhood and living in Virginia Beach. For a big chunk of my life, my cousins lived with us. It was six people in a little three-bedroom home. My dad was the only male in the home. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have my lola raising me but even more so that I pretty much had 3 older sisters, too.
I remember the card parties my family and a couple of my parents closest friends would host every weekend. we’d switch houses, different people would host…a nice change of scenery and i guess a good time off the clock for the working people. every time there was karaoke. It was a staple. The songs that really stick out were:
Stay (I missed you) by Lisa Loeb
Mr. DJ by Sharon Cuneta
Wind Beneath My Wings
Hero by Mariah Carey
and these people are still a staple in my life. Growing up with them…I wouldn’t have it any other way. and although some of us have grown apart we have always made it a point to come together at least once a year. so for being stronger than yesterday and remembering that there is a hero: mission accomplished. Sometimes I just have to be reminded that I am stronger then my mind lets me think. I really need to listen to my heart more. but above all, that I am a big girl, now. Thank God for blessing me with these people and that they’re still here. After at least twenty years. and to me, that is genuine friendship. and sometimes, people search their entire lives for the answer that has been there for a lifetime…truly blessed.
